Diabetic Foot Ulcers

What is Diabetic Foot Ulcer?
Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the most serious complications of diabetes, occurring due to a combination of poor blood circulation and nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy). These ulcers can develop quickly, often as small wounds that can progress to severe infections if untreated. They are a major cause of hospitalizations and amputations in diabetic patients.
Why It’s Important:
- Up to 25% of diabetic patients develop a foot ulcer at some point.
- Non-healing ulcers increase the risk of severe infections, gangrene, and amputations.
- Effective management can reduce complications and improve quality of life.
Symptoms of Diabetic Foot Ulcer:
- Persistent redness and swelling in the affected area.
- Wounds that do not heal within two weeks.
- Drainage of pus, bad odor, or black tissue around the wound.
- Pain or numbness in the feet.
